What is environmental pollution and its causes?

Pollution which affects the environment or human being is called environmental pollution. There are many kind of environmental pollution such as: water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution etc. The main reason for environmental pollution is the activities of human beings. Each second we pollute the environment in different ways. We throws and drain the waste to the water resources and causes water pollution. Industries and vehicle produce large amount of toxic gas to atmosphere and causes air pollution. The use of chemical fertilizer and pesticide is one of the reason for soil pollution. Construction works and other unpleasant sound is the reason for sound pollution. All these are environmental pollution
.
This is a bit more complicated than it appears as a question - What is a pollutant ? A pollutant is not just a substance which is foreign to a given ecology/environment, it also depends on how much (dosage) and toxicity (how harming), and lifecycle (its birth>death, or is natural cycke), its duration (how long), and its concentration (how much with a given space). For example water, especially clean water, is not considered a pollutant. But make it “too” clean and it can kill and dissolve most anything (depending on how much water there is, how long is the exposure to the water, etc. In fact more people drown in water than most other causes of accidental death. Drowning depends on all of the above factors. While water is not considered a pollutant or toxic under normal circumstances clearly it can be if something is inundated with it to an extreme.

That all said, the general answer is any substance which is not naturally occurring within a given environment or ecosystem which has a harmful impact on the general health and homeostasis of a specific organism or set of organism.

There are different types of environmental pollution. However it depends on its severity. Most common types are air, water, and land pollution. All of them give problems to our health and the environment.
  1. Air pollution- refers to the contamination of the air we breathe. Sources come from industrial sites, smokers and burning of fossil fuels from vehicles. Car emission is not only limited to cars but also planes and boats since the output they produce gets mixed up in the air. It causes respiratory problems such as asthma, lung cancer, and emphysema. Environmentally it causes smog when it comes to contact with fog. This also contributes to global warming and climate change because of the greenhouse effect.
  2. Water pollution - refers to the contamination of the different bodies of water which include oceans, seas, rivers, and streams. Sources come from untreated sewage, chemical wastes and oil spills that get to the different bodies of water. This type of pollution causes water borne diseases and environmentally destroys aquatic life.
  3. Land pollution- refers to the contamination in land by different materials that damages the terrestrial life. It can be closely linked to soil pollution. One of the main sources are insecticides and pesticides that are used to protect the plants. Others may be fertilizers that helps grow plants. Sometimes this type of environmental problem can also cause water pollution because it can contaminate ground water. This type of environmental pollution can cause food poisoning under serious circumstances.
Other types of environmental pollution include light, noise, and plastic
  1. Light pollution- is caused by too much light during the nighttime wherein one cannot really see the night sky pretty clearly. It causes trouble to stargazers. It causes strain to our eyesight due to glare when get exposed too much.
  2. Noise pollution- it is caused by too much unpleasant sound that surrounds us. Prolonged exposure causes problems in hearing. It also gives a very unpleasant feeling.
  3. Plastic pollution - is caused by too much plastic. Plastic are made from oil and these types of products are made to be durable yet cheap and they are disposed in one time use. As a result many of this plastic get ended up in rivers and other small bodies of and eventually to the ocean. Plastic pollution is a serious problem in the ocean. It kills wildlife by ingestion thinking that it is food causing digestion problems when it gets to the digestive tract of marine life. It also cause entanglement in long strands of plastic. Another eminent threat in this plastic is that it gets photodegraded when exposed sunlight becoming microplastics. It becomes a powdery substance that gets ingested by fish and eventually us humans since they become part of the food chain.
